Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was not detected in samples taken from hunter-killed deer during the state's 2007 hunting season, according to Dr. Walt Cottrell, Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife veterinarian. When you are getting ready for the whitetail season you should begin scouting in late summer by watching likely food sources. Does, fawns and bucks will be loading up on succulent grasses, clovers, ripening grains, berries and sedges at this time. Bucks dont always use the same food sources as the does, they often stay closer to their bedding areas. If they use the same food source...

I have been deer hunting now for 24 years and in that time I have accumulated a massive amount of toys and gadgets for my obsession of chasing whitetails. I deer hunt from Sept to the end of Dec with bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader so the gear that I am going to talk about here can be used by any deer hunter for the most part. The products that I will be talking about here work wel...

Now here is a very interesting white buck I have been watching since he was a fawn. He
lives on a freinds farm that I hunt, and proves to me how elusive these
bucks can be. I have seen him once or twice a year since he was a fawn.
Never more than twice in the same year...This is the 1st time I have
captured him on film. He was a spike at age 1 1/2... He was a 120
class 10 point at 2...

The
weather radio at work suddenly stole my attention away from the Boss
man, who had been ranting about what he wanted me to do in the
afternoon to make up for leaving early for hunting the evening before.
I stopped my mindless nodding in agreement and jumped to attention. I
grabbed Boss Man by his shoulders and said, Did you hear that, Man? A
cold front is moving in!!! I got to get to the ...

For some reason I always sleep well the night before the hunt. I guess
it is because I know I have a morning ahead that requires extreme
alertness and unity with my surroundings. Those who don’t hunt cannot
understand the ecstasy with which we enjoy the outdoors. The burning in
your lungs as you inhale your first breath of cold air outside the
camp. That sting in your toes that r...

Still hunting and stalking deer in standing corn or
beans is some of the funnest and nerve racking hunting you'll ever do.
Sometimes you won't see nothing and the next time you poke your head
into a row there'll be a deer chewing it's cud 15 feet from you looking
the other way.
How do you hunt the corn? First, try and get up in a tree to see
where the dee...

A popular game species, the whitetail is so well known
that it needs only a brief description. Antlers normally occur only in
males and are formed and shed each year. Growth of the antler starts in
April or May when the base of the antler, located on the skull, begins
to enlarge. During the growth period, the soft skin and short hair
which cover each antler have a plushlike q...

It
was a full two hours before dark, when I heard the 1st deer coming
through the cattails. Slurp, Slurp, his feet made the unmistakable
rhythmic, sound only feet getting pulled out of muck can make. It kept
getting closer, till finally a 140 class ten pointer emerged into a
creek that separated me from the bedding area. The buck crossed the
creek right where I expected, the turned and h...
