Small Streams
The clock rang, six AM, it seemed as if I had just closed my eyes for minute and now the sun was rising fast, burning the crisp morning fog off the fields. I was tired and disgruntled at my lack of rest. However, I did not hesitate to get up, for today is Monday, and that means a day of stream fishing out on my favorite waters. Scrambling to get into the car, I make sure that I have all the essentials, fly rod, vest and waiters, it\'s all there. I drive almost in a coma state still trying to steal a few extra minutes of sleep till I pass the first river on my journey the Wh

2007 Canadian Fly Fishing Championships
If only. If only I could have kept fish on that I hooked. If only I had made a few different decisions. If only the rotation I was in was a wee bit different. If only I had more experience fly fishing the sorts of conditions that we all faced. Shortly after the event had completed, I had a con...

The Fly Swap
Quilters have their bees and bakers have their cookie exchanges. At these events, the artists in their respective hobbies get together to exchange patterns and recipes, adding a little more to each other’s experience, each taking away something new to try. The equivalent for fly anglers, the phenomenon that is fly-swapping, accomplishes the same. The fly swap is beco...

Six Mile Water River
It wasnt about catching BIG Brown Trout. It wasnt about the opportunity to catch a lot of Brown Trout. It wasnt about even having a claim to catching truly wild Brown Trout. If anything, it was about.. a spiritual journey that can't be quite explained. It was about going home - if you can call home as some place you havent visited in 23 years....

Choosing The Proper Fly Fishing Leader and Tippet
Selecting the correct tapered leader and tippet for the type of fishing you are about to do is crucial. Nothing can spook fish quicker than an oversized tippet for the particular situation. On the other hand, and undersized tippet can result in the fly fisher losing their trophy before they even get a photo opportunity. We will start at the very basic of leader and tippet selection and the...

Confidence in Fly Fishing
For those of you who, like me, have memories of fishing that pre-date memories of school, think back to as many fishing partners and trips as you can. Even those people you only went fishing with once. Then try to recall times where the success or failure of a fly fisherman seemed to lie strictly on the fly fisherman\'s confidence. If you think about it in these terms, I bet you can rememb...

Choosing a Fly Rod
For many reasons, it is with some trepidation that I approach this subject. As I have stated in previous articles about fly fishing gear, you ask 15 people, and you get 15 different opinions. Choosing a fly rod is no different. In fact it might be the epitome of that statement. Fly anglers are picky about their fly rods, and they love their fly rods. To many it is like comparing spouses, a...

The Ubiquitous Woolly Bugger
The ubiquitous Woolly Bugger, never quite spelled correctly to my eyes, appeals to the eyes of every gamefish imaginable. If I had one pattern to fish the rest of my life, no matter what the fish, no matter what the conditions, this would be it. Steelhead, Trout, Salmon, Bass, Shad, Pike, you name it, they will hit this pattern. And the best thing? Usually the fish will be bigger than aver...
